GLOBAL CHALLENGES OF FOOD SECURITY AND QUALITY ASSURANCE: INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE AND THE CASE OF GEORGIA

Summary

Food security has emerged as a critical issue in the 21st century, intensified by global challenges such as rapid population growth, natural resource scarcity, climate change, and environmental degradation. A significant portion of the worldwide population continues to face insufficient caloric intake and imbalanced nutrition.

In today’s world, food security stands as one of the most pressing socio-economic challenges. These global pressures threaten both the quantity and quality of food supplies, directly linking food security to sustainable development, social well-being, and global stability.

The adoption of international food safety and quality standards—such as HACCP and GMP—plays a vital role in ensuring food safety, enhancing competitiveness, and supporting integration into European Union markets. Their success depends on a systemic approach that includes monitoring, workforce training, and continuous quality control.

Georgia faces particular vulnerabilities, relying on imports for more than half of its food supply. Local production remains weak, while unregistered enterprises pose additional risks. Moreover, the national minimum food basket provides fewer calories than international norms.

In this context, climate-smart agriculture is essential. It promotes efficient resource use, sustains productivity under climate change conditions, and strengthens agricultural resilience. For Georgia, this approach offers a path to reducing import dependency, boosting domestic production, and ensuring safe, high-quality food.

Ultimately, food security is not only an agricultural or economic matter—it is a cornerstone of global stability, public welfare, and human health. For Georgia, priority actions include strengthening local production, harmonizing quality control with European standards, promoting climate-smart agriculture, and increasing public awareness of healthy nutrition.
